The Royal Botanic Gardens, located about one mile from the city centre in the New Town have themed gardens, exhibitions and plant species from around the world. Calton Hill is easily identifiable from the infamous unfinished acropolis structure towering from the skyline. This is where the city's tag "The Athens of the North" hails from. Getting to the top of the hill is easy. If you are walking, a 5 minute staircase climbs from Waterloo Place; alternatively, you can drive and park at the top. The summit provides a panoramic view of the city as well as historic buildings that include an observatory.

Edinburgh Castle is the city's main tourist attraction. Perched on an extinct volcano, it is a landmark that can be seen from miles around the city. It also provides a wonderful backdrop to the main shopping centre in Princes Street. Visitors to the castle are welcome all year round but beware of the one o'clock gun!
