Edinburgh AttractionsThe Edinburgh Festivals in August are Edinburgh's biggest and most famous attractions, which include: the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe Festival, the Edinburgh Book Festival, the Edinburgh International Jazz and Blues Festival, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. The Royal Botanic Gardens, located about one mile from the city centre in the New Town have themed gardens, exhibitions and plant species from around the world. The hot houses are worth visiting even in winter. The gardens are also an idyllic setting for a simple stroll among the beautiful fauna. A cafe serves food and drinks. www.rbge.org.uk Calton Hill is easily identifiable from the infamous unfinished acropolis structure towering from the skyline. This is where the city's tag "The Athens of the North" hails from. Getting to the top of the hill is easy. If you are walking, a 5 minute staircase climbs from Waterloo Place; alternatively, you can drive and park at the top. The summit provides a panoramic view of the city as well as historic buildings that include an observatory. Edinburgh Castle is the city's main tourist attraction. Perched on an extinct volcano, it is a landmark that can be seen from miles around the city. It also provides a wonderful backdrop to the main shopping centre in Princes Street. Visitors to the castle are welcome all year round but beware of the one o'clock gun! Edinburgh Zoo is
the largest wildlife attraction in Scotland with more than 1,000 animals and is
heavily involved in promoting animal welfare, conservation and environmental education.
www.edinburghzoo.org.uk Dynamic Earth is a high-tech exhibition and education centre located in the William Younger centre, in Holyrood. Funded by the millennium project, this permanent exhibition takes visitors on a journey around the planet taking them back through time to the beginning of life on Earth. www.dynamicearth.co.uk National Gallery of Scotland has been home to Scotland's national collection of art since 1859 and encompasses works from the 14th century to the present day. www.natgalscot.ac.uk The New Museum of Scotland, as it is now known following the addition of an impressive new building to the site, is located in Edinburgh's Old Town not far from the city centre. The museum houses a huge collection of exhibits covering the history of Scotland. It is also home to one of Scotland's leading restaurants - the Tower. www.nms.ac.uk The Royal Yacht Britannia was launched on the 16th April 1953 at John Brown's shipyard in Clydebank. After travelling more than one million miles, she was returned to Scotland in 1998 and is now docked at the Port of Leith, providing visitors with an insight into royal life aboard the yacht. www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk The Scott Monument was built in the 1840s as a memorial to Sir Walter Scott. At 200ft high, it's a distinctive landmark that towers above Princes Street. Located in Princes Street Gardens where the physically fit can climb the 287 steps to the top. www.cac.org.uk St Giles' Cathedral is the City Church of Edinburgh and the High Kirk of Edinburgh. With its crown spire it is situated on the Roayal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Hoyroodhouse. www.stgilescathedral.org.uk Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano at the heart of Holyrood Park. The park, at the centre of the city, presents residents and visitors with a vast leisure area. Arthur's Seat, at 823ft above sea level, is a popular place for walks with the summit providing an excellent vantage point from which to view the city. Hogmanay in Edinburgh is perhaps the biggest New Year's party in Europe if not the World. The city gears up for New Year with a four day celebration of events and on New Year's Eve, the city centre is closed off to allow up to 200,000 party revellers to hit the streets to enjoy the various entertainment stands and midnight fireworks. www.edinburghshogmanay.org Edinburgh Golf Clubs are available all around the city, many within easy reach of Brodies Guest House.
